Benefit of Purchasing a Waterwise Distiller

A lot of random thoughts pop up while I drive, and a few days ago, it occurred to me that I've been a Waterwise distributor for over a decade. In that time, I've owned two distillers, and both are still "kickin'." One of the benefits of purchasing a Waterwise brand distiller is that the company will refurbish your old distiller and return it to you. People are dumping their Keurigs like last week's paper, and they take their old coffee makers to Goodwill or other thrift shops when they're done with them. But Waterwise distillers aren't cast aside as easily, because they just don't lose their value. People actually use their Waterwise distiller, and when it starts making a funny noise or has issues, it's like a panic when you might have to go without your home distilled water! That's why I've had two. The first one was sent in, refurbished, and then went to my sister. I purchased its replacement, a different version, so that I wouldn't have to wait to have water, and also so I could see how the different distillers worked. I think my current distiller has been going for five years.

Waterwise also has replacement parts if something breaks in your distiller. I'm not going to pretend that I know any of these parts or what the insides even look like, but they have people on hand that can help you over the phone. Even if the answer is "you probably ought to send it in to us!" at least it isn't going into the trash and having to be replaced. They are not only keeping water bottles out of the landfills, they are keeping broken accessories from landfills as well!

If you have a distiller that might need attention, you can call 1-800-874-9028 M-F 9-5 ET.

It's Time to Think About the Water You Drink

If you are still drinking water straight from the tap, it's time to think twice about this practice. If you are purchasing bottled water because you know there are many problems with tap water, I'm sad to inform you that what you are drinking is probably just as bad as your tap water. As a matter of fact, it probably IS tap water. We have been drinking distilled water for over a decade, and wouldn't feel comfortable doing anything else on a regular basis. Tap water has all sorts of contaminants from living pathogens, to heavy metals, prescription drugs and chemicals. I'm sure like most Americans, you are under the impression that your water supplier is making sure your water is safe to drink. Unfortunately, even the EPA says that a certain level of contamination is okay. The more water you drink, the more contamination you are consuming. With a home water distiller, you get pure, fresh water with every gallon you distill from your own home. No more funky tasting water, no more carcinogens, and no more lugging home heavy bottles of water. A home water distiller is just common sense. Continue reading to learn more about water distillers. It is a "kitchen gadget" you will use everyday.

How Drinking Water Gets Contaminated

Here are just a few examples of how our drinking water gets contaminated. A major source left wide open in this diagram is the house you see on the right. It doesn't specify all the things we pour down our drains, including the very things with which we clean our houses, as well as prescription drugs.

Water Purification Methods

Water Purification Methods

There are a number of different methods of preparing water for drinking that we all assume is better than tap water. Let's compare the different methods and how effective they are:

Filtration

Filtered water has passed through a fine strainer and/or activated carbon. While they reduce disagreeable tastes and odors, filters are not effective in removing many common contaminants such as arsenic, bacteria, copper, lead, nitrates, parasites, sodium and viruses. A filter can become a breeding ground for bacteria as the organic material which remains in the filter begins to decay. Another drawback is not knowing when to replace the filter. Some manufacturers suggest replacing filters when bad taste or odor returns. In reality, a filter may be able to control taste and odor long after it has lost its ability to reduce tasteless, odorless organics such as THMs (trihalomethanes) which are byproducts of chlorination.

Reverse Osmosis

RO systems force water under high pressure through a synthetic semipermeable membrane to reduce inorganic minerals. These systems vary widely in their ability to reject nitrates, chlorides and some other contaminants. RO performance is affected by water pressure, water temperature, pH, bacteria, dissolved solids and the chemical contaminant level of raw tap water. Like other filtration systems, gradual clogging of the system by collected contaminants will result in declining effectiveness and can also lead to contamination from bacterial growth.

Steam Distilled

Based on Mother Nature’s primary purification method, distillation uses evaporation and condensation to separate pure, fresh water from its contaminants. In nature the process is called the hydrologic cycle. It occurs when water evaporates, condenses, then falls to the earth as precipitation. Distillation, combined with carbon filtration, is the one water treatment technology that most completely reduces the widest range of contaminants, including biological, organic and inorganic elements. In fact, a quality distillation system provides water that is up to 99% free of impurities, including heavy metals and most chemicals. It is the treatment of choice for removing biological contaminants including cysts like Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The prolonged boiling process of distillation kills virtually all types of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and parasites. Microorganisms are not evaporated into the product water but remain in the boiling chamber as part of the residue. Additionally, a distillation system with activated carbon post filtration and venting is effective in removing pesticides and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Distillation provides consistent purity, gallon after gallon, year in, year out. No other technology can guarantee consistent quality over time. The purity of your drinking and cooking water is guaranteed when you make 100% steam distilled water with a Waterwise purifier/distiller.
This chart shows what to expect from different water sources and treatment:

Home Distilled vs Bottled Water

How Is Home Distilled Water Better than Bottled Water?

  • Americans are drinking bottled water in record numbers- a whopping 5 billion gallons in 2001, according to the International Bottled Water Association, an industry trade group. That's about the same amount of water that falls from the American Niagara Falls in 2 hours.
  • Ounce for ounce, bottled water costs more than gasoline. Depending on the brand, it costs 250 to 10,000 times more than tap water!
  • Americans spend more than $8.3 billion a year on bottled water, but what they're drinking may not be any safer or better regulated than tap water. (60-70% of bottled water sold in the US is exempt from federal regulations because it's packaged and sold in the same state, not crossing state lines.-Julie Stauffer, Body & Soul Magazine, Aug. 2005, p. 87.)
  • "Last year Americans spent nearly $11 billion on over 8 billion gallons of bottled water, and then tossed over 22 billion empty plastic bottles in the trash. In bottle production alone, the more than 70 million bottles of water consumed each day in the U.S. drain 1.5 million barrels of oil over the course of one year." -Solvie Karlstrom, Tapped Out: The True Cost of Bottled Water
While it may be no surprise that we are drinking a LOT of water, many people have not learned that most bottled water is not regulated. If you know anything about our water systems and how poorly that water is regulated, you should be VERY afraid! The first problem with bottled water is that you don't know what you're getting. The second problem with bottled water is that you are paying for it! The third problem is that there are SO many things that can be in water, if these things aren't being removed, your health will suffer in the end. What are we talking about here?
  1. Pathogens- Bacteria, viruses, and other nasty bugs which can be fatal. In 2001-2002, more than 1,000 people got sick and 7 died in 31 outbreaks of waterborne diseases from drinking water (CDC).
  2. Lead. Found in public water distribution systems and water pipes in some homes (built before 1930). A poisonous metal, lead can cause anemia, high blood pressure, kidney problems, increased miscarriage and low birth weight risk, and it also interferes with brain development in children.
  3. Nitrates. Found in fertilizers and sewage. Can lead to blue baby syndrome which is potentially fatal.
  4. Pesticides. Known to disrupt hormones, and have been linked to cancer, birth defects, and nervous system problems.
  5. Other contaminants. Arsenic, radon, disinfection by-products (chlorine by-products) and other additives like fluoride.
While these things may all be in bottled water, the scary thing is that many people still drink water straight from the tap and they are getting a good source of toxins every day. But let's assume you are purchasing bottled water and you have done your research on your supplier, and you feel pretty confident in the product you are getting. There is one more problem:

Toxin Leaches Into Bottled Water

A study headed by Londoner William Shotyk, director of the Institute of Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, found that polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, bottles leach a deadly toxin called antimony into the water. While Shotyk agrees with Canadian Bottled Water Association officials that the levels of antimony found in the study are well below Health Canada accepted levels, he also asks the question, "Is there going to be a beneficial effect to having antimony in the water?"
It's the timeless argument between scientists and government officials...just how much poison is enough to damage, and why should we allow any poison at all? Antimony in small doses can cause headache, dizziness, and depression. Larger doses cause violent and frequent vomiting and can lead to death. (Antimony is already implicated in the toxic gas theory for crib death.)
It's important to note that the longer the water is in the bottle, the more antimony the water will contain. Also, re-using water bottles, is a no-no for this reason.

What About Cost of Bottled Water and Home Distilled Water?

You can save over 70% with Waterwise Home Distilled Water vs Bottled Water!

What You Get With Home Distilled Water

The best part is, you can take your tap water and turn it into something that is no longer harmful to your body, and is actually GOOD for your body! Check out our chart to see how distilled water is better. Above all, YOU know that your water is clean and pure because you are seeing the distillation process for yourself. You can't get that from your water bottling company!

What Exactly IS Distilled Water?

Water in its purest form is found in the vapor that rises from the Earth’s surface, leaving behind any contaminants it may have collected. This process of evaporation, condensation and precipitation is known as the Hydrologic Cycle. Distillation simulates this process, turning ordinary tap water into pure, clean steam vapor which is condensed, then passed through an organic coconut shell filter. This technology effectively removes bacteria, parasites, herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, and a whole list of synthetic chemicals and industrial pollutants.
A home distiller is like any other kitchen appliance that sits on your counter, or wherever you decide to put it. You simply plug it in! Once you taste home distilled water, you will wonder why you ever drank anything else.

Is it REALLY Safe to Drink Bottled Water?

"I bought bottled water for the past two years. After reading numerous books, articles and other literature about health benefits of distilled, I purchased a Waterwise distiller. Your literature helped me realize the cost effectiveness of having my own distiller. I am extremely pleased and completely satisfied with the results of using your product." -Don, Mercer, WI

"No bottled water of any brand can compare to the taste of what my Waterwise distiller produces. I am so glad to have it.... Thank you very, very much." -Heather, Macon, GA

"The Waterwise distiller is easy to use and economical. It costs much less than having bottled water delivered. And since we produce it ourselves we know it's pure." -Anthony and Julie, Everson, WA

"The vast majority of bottled water is merely public tap water. And the real shock is you could pay as much as $3.50 a bottle for the same objectionable quality that comes from your home tap water." -Dr. Robert D. Willix, Jr., MD

Cooking with Distilled Water

Cooking with Distilled Water

There are many uses for distilled water, and most of those are in the kitchen. Have you explored the many uses of distilled water yet?
Use fresh, purified/distilled water to bring out the full-bodied flavor of all your favorite recipes. You'll notice the improved taste and appearance of everything you prepare- from steamed vegetables to delicious baked pies- made with homemade 100% distilled water. It enhances the natural flavor of foods and beverages, allowing the savory essence of herbs and spices to be released in soups and water-based sauces without competition from chlorine or other chemicals.
Impurities also raise the boiling point of water so distilled water will come to a boil more quickly than tap water. This saves time and energy.

Uses for Distilled Water in the Kitchen

  • Vegetables- There is noticeable taste improvement in vegetables when they are cooked in pure water. There is less discoloration and, naturally, contaminants are not introduced. Whether cooking or steaming fresh vegetables, always begin with distilled water.
  • Pasta/Rice- Another great application is pasta. Macaroni, noodles, and rice absorb more water than when cooked in ordinary tap water. They maintain better texture and flavor and are less likely to cling together.
  • Baking- Because of the absence of virtually all dissolved substances, distilled water is a better liquefier than tap water. Pure water absorbs slightly more flour giving the batter a better texture. Pastries, pancakes, breads, pizza dough and other batter recipes will taste better because of the absence of contaminants that could alter the flavor of other ingredients.
  • Canning- Purified/distilled water is excellent to use for canning and preserving food. Not only do fruits and vegetables retain a more natural color, but their flavor is better. Because the water is sterile, canners report more success in sealing jars and a much lower spoilage rate.
  • Sprouts/Grasses- When sprouting, purified/distilled water is excellent for germinating seeds such as wheatgrass, alfalfa or bean. Always soak seeds in pure water for 9-12 hours and then rinse them daily thereafter using distilled water. Water is your primary ingredient, so you surely want to use the purest water possible. You will achieve a faster and higher degree of germination and sprouts will grow free of contaminants found in ordinary tap water. Sprouts will also retain their crispness for a longer period of time.
  • Crystal Clear Ice Cubes- Due to the absence of impurities, there is a noticeable difference in ice cubes made from purified/distilled water. Not only are they more appealing because they are crystal clear, but they freeze harder and faster.
  • Reconstituting- When reconstituting dehydrated food, purified/distilled water is the WiseChoice® since only water was removed in the original process of dehydrating. This includes reconstituting prunes, raisins and other types of fruits and/or vegetables. Dehydrated foods will have a better "absorption rate" than with other waters because there is a greater difference in density between dehydrated food and distilled water than there is between dehydrated food and impure water. Therefore, there is more "pressure" for pure water to enter the dehydrated food.
  • Pure Drinks- When reconstituting any concentrate with 100% distilled water, such as orange, grapefruit or grape juice, you will notice a definite improvement. It tastes much closer to the fresh product. It is also possible to stretch the volume of your finished drink. Up to twenty-five percent more water can be added and still make a delicious blend. You will also use less coffee or tea than with tap water. Ordinarily, the amount used to make these beverages can be reduced by approximately one third, while still maintaining the rich flavor...a simple way to reduce cost.

Pure Tips

  • Pre-wash all ingredients in purified/distilled water to ensure clean, safe food preparation.
  • Preserve valuable food nutrients by washing food instead of peeling.
  • Use only fresh, pure water to enhance natural flavors and eliminate distasteful chemicals.
  • Always use ice cubes made with purified/distilled water.
  • To preserve texture, taste, and nutritional value use only homemade 100% steam distilled.

Benefits of Drinking Water

Benefits of Drinking Water

History has revealed that the civilizations that had the cleanest and purest water were typically the strongest, healthiest and most vibrant civilizations of their era. That’s one reason why drinking steam distilled water yields so many wonderful health benefits. Some of them you may recognize, while others may be new to you.

You can gain amazing health benefits from a steady dose of 8 glasses of purified water a day:
  • Vastly improves your energy
  • Sharpens your mental and physical performance
  • Gradually improves your skin’s appearance and reduces wrinkles
  • Fosters weight loss. F. Batmanghelidj, MD, author of the acclaimed book, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, says that many times the body’s request for water is actually misinterpreted as hunger.
  • Reduces stress, anxiety and depression
  • Reduces headaches and dizzy spells
  • Bolsters heart health. According to a 6 year study of more than 20,000 healthy men and women aged 38-100 in the May 1, 2002, American Journal of Epidemiology, it was found that women who drank more than five glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to die from heart attack than those who drank less than two glasses. The heart benefits were even greater in men.
  • May relieve symptoms of asthma, allergies and arthritis
Beyond these benefits, history proves that water can do much, much more. So much so that many ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Hebrews, Hindus, Chinese and Native Americans used water therapeutically in many ways to heal injury and treat disease. And, the reasons why are obvious. Examine the human body and you’ll find it’s almost 70% water.
Maintaining an adequate level of hydration is essential for efficient regulation of your body’s normal physiological functions. As you can imagine, if your brain is not properly hydrated, your thinking ability becomes dull, you have trouble making the best decisions and your potential for headaches and dizziness increases. Your liver breaks down fats, so when it’s below its hydration mark, your digestive system experiences a chain reaction of imbalances. And so on.
Take a closer look at what water does inside your body and you’ll discover that it:
  • Aids in proper digestion
  • Improves oxygen delivery to cells
  • Removes toxins and waste products
  • Transports nutrients and increases nutrient absorption
  • Cushions and lubricates joints
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Generates cellular energy
  • Improves immune function
It’s obvious if you don’t drink enough water you may encounter health problems. But if you drink clean, pure water you can bolster your health and performance throughout life. Naturally you want the same clean, abundant water supply for your family as the mighty and memorable civilizations of times past. But there has always been an unseen struggle—the struggle of creating and maintaining a clean water supply. Unfold the chronicles of history and you’ll discover that people commonly died from waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever. As populations have increased, the demand for properly treated water has also increased. Today, we have impressive municipalities that have done an outstanding job, but there’s a problem of aging water treatment systems overwhelmed by the large volume of contaminants.

Non-Electric Water Distiller

So it seems right now that all the rage in purifying water is the non-electric water distiller. It took me a little while to realize why the non-electric distiller was getting so popular, but now it makes sense. Have you ever heard about when the $hit hits the fan, aka shtf? Just so I don't have to elaborate too much, you can check out http://www.shtfplan.com/.

Whether by economic collapse, or catastrophic event, there are some people out there trying to educate us on what to do when the shtf. The most important thing we will need to be able to do is provide clean water to drink. There are two ways to do this. Store it in massive containers in your basement, or make it as you need it. Since we really don't know if or when we will ever need stockpiles of water, it makes more sense to me to have a non-electric distiller on hand. (If there is an economic collapse or catastrophic event, you probably won't have electricity...)

Since distilling water provides the most pure water possible, you can trust that your own water distiller will provide the safest drinking water. And you don't have to wait for a catastrophe before you start using the non-electric distiller! It can be used daily in your home, while camping, and even brought to other countries where drinking water is questionable.

If you have been thinking about purchasing a water distiller, now is the time to really consider the non-electric. It can be used on your stove top, grill, or a fire pit...or anywhere else there is heat (like a wood burning stove).

What are YOU drinking?

This morning at batting practice, I had to drink some bottled water due to my poor planning. While it could have been much worse (and it sometimes is), I noticed that the water tasted an awful lot like carrots. Yes, carrots. How weird, I thought.

And then I thought about the last time I had to drink some bottled water and how it smelled when I raised it to take a drink...like chlorine.

So this morning I started thinking about how many people out there are still drinking the "unknown" also know as "bottled water," because there really is no telling what's in those things...

Some of it is tap water. It says "municipal sources" on the bottle. Some of it is spring water. Some is distilled, reverse osmosis, or filtered. But ALL of it is HIGHLY unregulated. I have purchased bottled distilled water before, and it tasted nothing like my home distilled water I purify myself. Why is that?

So anyway, I started this blog to let people know that not only do you drink SAFER water when you distill it yourself, but you also save money! (Not to mention getting rid of all those pesky plastic bottles you've been lugging home all this time.)
